Dry shampoo for dogs can be a really great solution for a quick freshen up, but it's not a replacement for good grooming habits and regular baths.

How to use dry shampoo on dogs

You can find dry shampoo for dogs in your local pet store or the vet. It doesn’t usually contain any harmful ingredients or cause any skin irritation, and many dog owners use it for ’emergency baths’.

Both you and your dog have sebaceous glands that are attached to hair follicles. Your dog’s sebaceous glands are present in large numbers near the paws, back of the neck, rump, chin and tail area.

The sebaceous glands produce a light, oily substance called sebum that keeps the skin healthy, well moisturized and shiny. Sebum also has natural antibiotic properties that provide the first line of defense against bacteria. The sebum is what gives your dog (and you too, if you admit it!) her distinct scent.

It’s basically a fine powder, like baking soda or talc, which absorbs dirt from both the skin and hair. Here are some simple steps for using dry shampoo on dogs:

This serves to remove dead strands and any surface dirt. For long-haired breeds brushing also reduces knots and tangles. This is a really important step, so don’t forget it, in order to make the whole process easier.

How to:

1. Combine all ingredients and pour into a container with a shaker top (spice or seasoning jars work well).

2. Brush your dog first then shake on the dry shampoo.

3. Rub through your dog’s coat with your hands. Caution: Your dark dog will appear ghost-ish until you towel off the excess!

4. Brush again and then dust off your dog with an old towel.
